MEP urges Spain to cut diplomatic ties with Israel
The Spanish member of the European Parliament stated her position following Israel's targeting of Beirut
Irene Montero, a Spanish Member of the EU Parliament from the left-wing Unidas Podemos party, urged the Madrid government to sever diplomatic relations with Israel in reaction to Israel's attack on Beirut on 30 July.
“They are not going to stop, and the EU must cease its complicity in these genocides,” Montero stated. Reaffirming her demand for an arms embargo against Israel, she urged the Spanish government to seize the ship currently in Spanish waters carrying military fuel and prevent it from reaching Tel Aviv.
Spain has consistently criticized Israel's war crimes against Palestinians and expressed support for the Palestinian cause.
In May, Spain officially recognized Palestinian statehood alongside Ireland and Norway. In the same month, Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares affirmed that Madrid will not authorize ships carrying weapons for Israel to call at its ports, given that the EU nation claims that it does not “want to contribute to war” in Gaza.
On 30 July, the Israeli military targeted a residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, in the Haret Hreik neighborhood. Three civilians, a woman and two children, were killed in the attack, and around 70 were injured.
The target was Fuad Shukr, top military advisor to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the director of the entirety of the resistance group’s military operations.
Hezbollah said on Wednesday morning that search operations are still ongoing. Shukr’s fate remains unknown.
